Sam Ulano is often described as having the ability to “open your mind and make you think.” Whether through his music or his witticisms about life, Sam brings a unique approach to living. Taking up the drums at age 13, Sam opened his first studio four years later and began teaching and writing about the drums. He followed up high school with four years at the Manhattan School of Music before being drafted into the army, where he trained a 100-piece drum corps.
Now 81 years old and showing no signs of letting up, Sam is a performer, educator and author who has been in the music profession for over 65 years. During that time, he has studied with and taught the best of them, while carving out a niche for himself as a respected drummer on the New York scene. Sam has played at many of the top nightspots in New York, including the Gaslight Club and, currently, the famed Garage in Greenwich Village. He’s played the summer resorts, the concert field, and is known as “Mr. Rhythm” for his more than 500 shows for young audiences throughout the New York school system. He has appeared on television with Steve Allen on The Tonight Show, as well as with Gary Moore, Ernie Kovacs, and Joe Franklin.
Well-known for his methods of drum teaching and his progressive approach to writing about the instrument he loves... Sam has over 2500 instruction books to his credit—300 in the past five years alone! He also has produced records, audio and video tapes, and CDs of his instruction and performance. He continues to write, teach, and perform in his own inimitable style.
